Dr.
Thomas Davies has directed the Cuesta Master Chorale since 1985.
He has also been at Cal Poly since 1983
as Director of Choral Activities and Vocal Studies. As a Professor of Music
there, he conducts three choirs, teaches conducting as well as a course in
Literature and Rehearsal Techniques.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Davies received his Bachelor of Music Education degree at Bowling Green State University and his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Southern California where his principal conducting teacher was Rodney Eichenberger. He was a member of two conducting workshops led by Helmuth Rilling at the Oregon Bach Festival as well as a member of its Festival Chorus for seven years.
In addition to his work at Cal Poly and Cuesta, Dr. Davies serves as one of several conductors for Pacific Repertory Opera. He is the Choral Conductor for the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival, and is Associate Director of the Oregon Bach Festival Master Class in Choral Orchestral Conducting. He currently serves as the California representative to the National Collegiate Choral Association and is a former President of the Western Division of The American Choral Directors Association.
Susan
Azaret Davies enjoys a dual career as a pianist and a singer. She
has appeared frequently as mezzo soprano soloist with the Cuesta Master Chorale,
most recently in the Bach B-minor Mass in May 2006. She appeared as mezzo
soprano soloist with the San Luis Obispo Symphony in March 2005, and as pianist
for Pacific Repertory Opera’s Opera in the Mission Gala in February
2005. Ms. Davies teaches piano at Cal Poly, is on the music faculty at Idyllwild
Summer Arts, and is the the choir director /organist at St. Paul the Apostle
Catholic Church in Pismo Beach.
Festival appearances include the Oregon Bach Festival, the Cabrillo Festival, the Long Beach Bach Festival, the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival and in a series of concerts with the Gachinger Kantorei of Stuttgart and the New York Philharmonic. As a pianist she has performed most recently in recital for the Mozart Festival, the Cal Poly Symphony, the San Luis Obispo Symphony, Pacific Repertory Opera, and in a faculty recital at Idyllwild Summer Arts. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in a trio recital in 2001.
